This year Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be celebrated on January 20, and as in years past, Americans will honor the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. King by participating in the MLK Day of Service. Established in 1994, the MLK Day of Service is part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative that encourages Americans to volunteer and make a positive difference in their communities.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in freedom, justice, and making America a better place to live through nonviolent social change. The MLK Day of Service is an opportunity for Americans of all ages and walks of life to celebrate his teachings and principles, and to answer one of Dr. King’s most famous questions: “What are you doing for others?”
MLK Day – A Day of Service
From sorting donated food and clothing to visiting with senior citizens, people throughout the country will be spending MLK Day donating their time and talents to help their local communities.
